Eighty-two and restless, Mohammad Fazal, one of the most controversial heads of state in recent times, completes his tenure as Governor of Maharashtra on November 26 * A long wait for the government: New Zealand once took 47 days to create a new government. This is the price one pays in a democracy. Several independents had to be accommodated this time, thus the delay in government formation.
* Too active... over-active? I'm here to work. I'm not merely a Governor, I'm the government. It is a good sign that the Supreme Court has empowered us to prosecute ministers if we find them doing undesirable things. The Governor's office must have meaning, or else why not abolish it? The cost of the four Raj Bhavans in the state comes to around Rs 3,000 crores. Why waste money? * Shielding his former ADC: Till date, I have not received a single complaint against Deepak Pandey from his wife -- written or verbal. He should have a fair trial. I'm surprised to receive letters from people like Julio Ribeiro asking me to sack Pandey. Why should I when the law is taking its own process? The criticism projects me as a co-accused! * Housing controversy: The 230 employees under me are living in pathetic conditions, with 16 dumped in 10"x10" rooms and our state government had not done anything. I wanted to restore their self-esteem and took permission to build 375 square feet flats for them. I don't want them to stay like pigs! Had Sushilkumar Shinde, the then CM, not given his consent, I would have resigned. * Filmi crush! When Presidents and Prime Ministers are invited to inaugurate film festivals, why can't I organise a film mahurat at Raj Bhavan? I invited people from an industry which is recognised. I have no fascination for filmstars. * People's man: The Governor should not be a mystery. It would be a good idea to open a part of Raj Bhavan as a tourist attraction.
